Globe Project Description

Globe Project directions and coordinates

Globe Project
Each student will need:
· 3 pieces of white 12x18” heavyweight construction paper
· masking or painter’s tape (tape will not show)
· 1 yardstick
· pencil and big eraser
· markers or colored pencils (no crayons)
· scissors
· hole punch
· 2 large brads
Step 1: Assembling the Map
1. Place 3 pieces of paper vertically, side by side on a large surface.
2. Tape together the papers, making sure they do not overlap.
3. It is very important that you now have one, large, 18x36” paper.
Step 2: Marking the Lines of Latitude
1. With a pencil, draw 17 lines of latitude with 1” in between each line. Do this by
first taking your yardstick and making small dots one inch apart along each side of
the paper. Connect the dots across the paper to make straight, horizontal lines.
2. Label the center line as the “Equator”. Draw over this line with a dark colored
marker.
3. Above each line of latitude, in pencil, label the line in 10 degree intervals.
Remember, lines north (above) of the equator end in “N” and lines south (below)
of the equator end in “S” (ex: 10°N or 10°S).
4. Find 25°N and draw a line of latitude in pencil. Label the line “Tropic of Cancer.”
Color the line with a dark colored marker different from the equator.
5. Find 25°S and draw a line of latitude in pencil. Label the line “Tropic of
Capricorn.” Draw over this line with a different color from the other lines.

Step 3: Marking the Lines of Longitude
1. With a pencil, draw 35 lines of longitude with 1” in between each line (same as
you did with the lines of latitude).
2. Label the center line the “Prime Meridian” and color it.
3. To the right of each line of longitude, in pencil, label the lines in 10 degree
intervals. Remember, lines east (right) of the prime meridian end in “E” and lines
west (left) of the prime meridian end in “W” (ex: 10°E or 10°W).
Step 4: Plotting the Continents
1. Follow the plotting pattern on the next few pages. This is done like a “connect the
dots”. Once you plot a point, connect it to the point before it. Continue in this
same way until the entire continent is complete.
2. Once a continent is formed, label and color it. Color each continent a different
color.
3. The remaining background should be colored as the oceans of the world. Label
the four major oceans: Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific
Ocean.
4. Hand in your map to be laminated before going on to step five.
Step 5: Putting the Globe Together
1. Cut each line of longitude from the bottom until you reach the Tropic of Capricorn
and from the top until you reach the Tropic of Cancer.
2. Punch a hole in the top center of each strip. Connect all the strips, one over the
other and fasten with a brad.
